We deeply desire connection with the sweet, sensitive, and fun Thai people. Making friendships and sharing more of our lives with them motivates us to learn their language.
However, learning Thai has it's challenges. It's a tonal language, which means one word can have up to five different meanings depending on the tone of your voice as you say the word (here's an example). This learning process is like gymnastics for our ears and mouths.
Emily had a funny moment at a local market when ordering food in Thai. She meant to ask for basil chicken and instead politely asked for "purse chicken." The man corrected her and they had a good laugh together.
Putting ourselves in the position of learners takes humility. Please pray for us to lean into God for help and to be empowered by the Holy Spirit as we study Thai (and laugh when we mess up).
We've been enjoying Thai tutoring with Kruu (teacher) Ning.
We celebrated our 8th anniversary on September 17th! God has been so good to lead and grow us as a couple.
Benson loves talking to his grandparents on our house phone. It's more laid back than video calls and entertaining for us to hear his side of the conversation.
Lucy's favorite spot is just outside our front door where we take off our shoes (as is custom when entering a home in Thailand). She loves diving into the pile to mix n' match her favorite styles.
- language acquisition and the ability to have more meaningful conversations with Thais
- great communication with our foundation and immigration as we renew our visas this month
- safety and protection from snakes, Thai centipedes, and other critters we've seen in our yard lately
